Coyote Snow Pickets

Possibly the most famous of all MSR products, the Coyote Snow Picket has stood atop the world's highest peaks as well as in countless snowy playgrounds right here in North America. Coyote Snow Pickets are extruded from aircraft-grade heat-treated aluminum, which minimizes weight and maximizes strength. We modified the T-shaped cross-section and put more metal where strength and bending resistance are needed most. The result is a 20% increase in holding power over other pickets because our design exposes more surface area to the snow. Coyotes are convenient, too—attachment points are at 3-inch/7.6cm intervals along the neutral axis.

Length: 2ft and 3ft (61cm and 91cm)

Weight: 13oz/369g and 18.5oz/525g

Sizing for Snow Depths

Due to constant variations in temperature, wind, moisture and sun exposure, snow conditions vary radically. For snowshoeing on firm snow or established snowshoe trails, MSR recommends using their standard 22" snowshoes for all weight ranges. This size will provide more than enough flotation, plus it will be lighter and more nimble than larger models. If you spend the majority of your time snowshoeing in softer and deeper snow, MSR recommends adding their optional tails to the Denali and Evo models or moving up in size with one of our Lightning models.

Also, when snowshoeing with a group, walk single file. This will pack the trail for those behind the leader ("trailbreaker") and make the going easier for them. The lead person will need the most flotation, while those who follow can usually use smaller snowshoes. You can provide regular relief for the trailbreaker by rotating the lead as necessary.
